“They had it for sale, we were in the market – and we got it!” exclaimed Adam Eguia, a VFW Post 6236 official in Decatur.
Eguia was referring to the VFW’s purchase of the former Elks Lodge building in Decatur. The purchase price was not disclosed.
The transaction was completed in less than five days after the building at 327 N. Second St. was listed for sale. Final paperwork was signed last week.
The VFW is currently located at 127 N. Third Street.
The transition to the new building is likely to take a few weeks. Eguia stated that some upgrades will be required for the new home, as well as license transfers.
“So it’ll probably be late October or early November. “We’re going from a small place to a much bigger place,” Eguia said, laughing.
After more than 118 years of operation, the Elks lodge closed its doors on March 22 due to dwindling membership and financial resources. It was merged into the Bluffton Elks organization.
The Decatur VFW has 434 members, including comrades – fellow veterans who share a special bond due to their military service, particularly those who served overseas – and auxiliary.
“We donate a lot of money to the community and non-profits. Last year, we gave away over $27,000,” Eguia stated.
Greg Light is the commander of post 6236. Eguia serves as president of both the auxiliary and the VFW’s Fourth District.
After the move to Second St. is completed, the Third St. lodge will most likely be put up for sale.
