Former Allen County Sheriff wants early prison release due to health reasons

TOLEDO, Ohio – The former Allen County sheriff is seeking an early release from federal prison for medical reasons.

Sam Crish has requested a Compassionate Release because he claims to have several serious health issues. According to court documents, he has untreated skin cancer and requires a hip replacement. He says that his hip pain makes it difficult for him to sleep, walk, and work.

Lawyers for the federal government oppose Crish’s early release, claiming that doctors have not ordered any changes to his incarceration other than a lower bunk, and that he has not been denied medical care. He had a benign tumor removed from his brain in 2023, and his appendix was also removed that year.

In 2019, Crish was sentenced to 11 years and four months in prison for bribery and extortion. He was also ordered to pay over $600,000 in restitution for accepting money under false pretenses while sheriff. Crish claims his gambling addiction motivated his actions.

The federal judge has not ruled on his motion.
