Bakersfield, California – The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is investigating a homicide reported at California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi on Tuesday.
Prison officials said Malik Campbell, 26, was discovered unresponsive in his cell around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. His cellmate, 29-year-old Donte Walker, was immediately removed.
Life-saving measures were initiated, and he was transported to the prison’s triage and treatment area where he was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m.
Walker was placed in restricted housing, according to officials. There was no weapon recovered.
According to officials, Campbell was arrested in October 2024 in San Diego County for voluntary manslaughter with enhancement of a street gang, assault with force, and carrying a loaded firearm in public that was not registered to the owner.
Walker was arrested in June 2022 in Sacramento County and sentenced to four years in prison for second-degree robbery. Officials identified him as a second striker.
There were no injuries to any other inmates or staff.
