Amarillo, Texas – Dangerous thunderstorms are expected to develop across the Texas Panhandle Tuesday afternoon, with the potential for golf ball–sized hail and damaging wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph. According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, these storms could intensify rapidly and remain a threat through at least 6 p.m.
Two areas are at the highest risk for storm development: one centered near Perryton in the northern Panhandle and another stretching near Vega to the west. Both zones face a 40–60% chance of large hail, while damaging winds of 70 mph carry a 20–40% probability.
Communities including Perryton, Beaver, Vega, and nearby counties are urged to prepare for fast-growing storms that could damage vehicles, shatter windows, and down power lines. Travel along Highways 83 and 385 may also be affected by low visibility and debris.
Residents are strongly advised to have multiple ways of receiving warnings, as severe weather may strike with little notice. Emergency officials recommend staying indoors, moving away from windows, and securing outdoor items.
Storm activity is expected to diminish after sunset, though additional alerts could be issued if new storm cells form.
