Indiana State Police are looking into a possible suicide attempt at the Allen County Jail

Fort Wayne, Indiana – An inmate at the Allen County Jail is in critical condition after attempting suicide on Friday.

According to Indiana State Police, officers were dispatched Friday to investigate and discovered an unresponsive inmate in their cell. ISP stated that jail staff “immediately provided medical attention until paramedics arrived.”

The inmate was taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition.

ISP declined to provide any additional information; the investigation is still ongoing.

In June, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed against the Allen County Board of Commissioners, Sheriff Troy Hershberger, and five other officers following the suicide of an inmate in January 2024. The lawsuit claims the defendants “failed to protect” the man during his ongoing struggles that led to his death, and that jail conditions also played a role.
