Strong Thunderstorm Moves Across Central Vermont Wind Gusts and Hail Possible

Barre, Vermont – Vermont residents from Barre to Montpelier are being urged to stay indoors Wednesday afternoon as a strong thunderstorm moves across central Washington and Orange Counties. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a weather alert warning of wind gusts up to 50 mph, small hail, and the potential for downed trees and power lines along I-89 until 2:15 p.m.

Doppler radar tracked a fast-moving storm over Barre City at 1:30 p.m., moving east at 15 mph. Residents in Barre, Montpelier, and surrounding towns are urged to secure loose objects and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly along I-89 between mile markers 44 and 56, where the storm is expected to be most intense. Torrential rainfall is also possible, increasing the risk of localized flooding.

The good news is that Thursday will bring relief, with mostly clear skies and a high near 83°F. However, dense fog is expected early in the morning, especially before 8 a.m., so drivers should plan for limited visibility during the commute.

Looking ahead, Friday and Saturday will provide ideal conditions for outdoor plans, with sunny skies and highs in the low to mid-80s. Calm winds will help keep conditions comfortable, but humidity may return by Sunday, with a 50% chance of afternoon thunderstorms. This unsettled weather will continue into Monday, as weak disturbances move through northern New England. Residents planning outdoor events should remain weather-aware and be prepared for potential changes in the forecast.
