Two EF-1 Tornadoes Strike Shelby County, Missouri, Causing Farm Damage

Two brief but destructive EF-1 tornadoes hit Shelby County, Missouri, on Saturday evening, causing damage to farm buildings and uprooting trees. According to the US National Weather Service in St. Louis, the first tornado touched down near Leonard at 6:22 p.m. It lasted less than one minute, with maximum winds of 96 mph, traveling 0.4 miles and reaching a width of 75 yards. Several farm structures were destroyed before the tornado dissipated.

The second tornado formed just one minute later, at 6:23 p.m., near Leonard. With peak winds of 99 mph, this tornado was on the ground for about three minutes, covering a path of 3.1 miles and expanding to a width of 100 yards. It caused additional damage to farm buildings and knocked down numerous trees.

Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported, although significant structural damage to agricultural properties occurred. The National Weather Service noted that the tornadoes were quick-hitting, leaving little time for residents to respond.

Meteorologists continue to monitor weather patterns in the region, as late-summer storms can still bring severe weather to Missouri. Residents, especially in rural areas with limited shelter options, are advised to stay alert to weather watches and warnings.

Damage assessments released on Sunday highlight the significant destruction that even short-lived tornadoes can cause, especially to exposed rural infrastructure.
