Extreme Heat Continues in California’s High Desert, Risk of Heat Illness

California’s high desert areas, including Ridgecrest, California City, and Mojave, are experiencing triple-digit heat, with temperatures reaching near 111 degrees. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the Indian Wells Valley, Mojave Desert Slopes, and the broader Mojave Desert region, lasting until 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Overnight lows will remain in the lower 80s, offering little relief. The combination of extreme daytime heat and warm nights increases the risk of heat-related illness. Local officials are urging residents to limit outdoor activities to early morning or evening hours, stay hydrated, and use air conditioning when possible.

Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, young children, and those without air conditioning, are at the highest risk. It’s also important to never leave pets or children in vehicles, as temperatures inside can become deadly in just minutes.

Relief is expected midweek as temperatures gradually drop, but heat safety measures are essential until then.
