Dodge City, Kansas – A powerful heat wave will bring dangerously high temperatures to western and central Kansas on Friday, with highs expected between 104°F and 107°F in cities from Garden City to Hays.
The National Weather Service in Dodge City has issued a heat advisory for the entire region, warning of potentially hazardous conditions throughout the day.
Extreme Heat Across Key Kansas Cities
The hottest afternoon temperatures are expected in Dodge City, Liberal, Scott City, and Great Bend, with heat index values nearly matching the actual air temperature because of the exceptionally dry air.
Emergency officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor activities during the peak afternoon hours. Even in low humidity, heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke can occur quickly.
Safety Precautions for Residents and Travelers
Travelers on U.S. Highways 50, 54, and 83 should take extra care, as extreme heat can affect both vehicles and passengers. Authorities recommend:
- Keeping pets in shaded areas with plenty of water.
- Checking on elderly neighbors or anyone without air conditioning.
- Drinking water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
While the dry air may allow for quicker cooling after sunset, providing some relief in the late evening and early morning, the hottest part of the day will be dangerous.
Advisory Duration and Updates
The heat advisory is in effect through Friday evening. If conditions persist, updates may extend the alert into the weekend. Residents should stay tuned to local forecasts and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during peak heat.
