Spokane, Washington – Heavy thunderstorms over the Swawilla Burn Scar have triggered a Flash Flood Warning for parts of eastern Washington, putting Keller and the Colville Reservation under heightened alert Thursday. The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that Doppler radar detected intense rainfall on the burned terrain, with flash flooding already occurring or expected to begin shortly.
The warning, in effect until 2 p.m., covers northern Lincoln, southeastern Okanogan, and southwestern Ferry counties. Officials caution that runoff over steep, unstable slopes in the burn scar is likely to cause mudslides, rockslides, and rapid flooding. Mt. Tolman Road is a particular concern, as debris could block travel routes and damage property.
Residents and travelers near Keller are urged to avoid low-lying roads, stay clear of ravines and drainage areas, and be ready to move to higher ground at a moment’s notice. Authorities also advise keeping mobile devices charged and monitoring emergency alerts for updates.
Even after the current warning expires, additional storms later today could bring renewed flooding threats. The NWS stresses that post-wildfire landscapes are especially prone to flash floods, as the burned soil cannot absorb heavy rainfall.
With more thunderstorms possible into the evening, residents should remain weather-aware and take precautions to protect life and property during this high-risk period.
