Heat Advisory Issued for Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles as Dangerous Heat Returns

Dangerous heat is making a return to the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, with temperatures expected to climb as high as 105 degrees Thursday afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a Heat Advisory that will remain in effect from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday for much of the Panhandle, including Amarillo, Guymon, Dumas, Canyon, and Palo Duro Canyon State Park, where highs could reach 106 degrees. The combination of high temperatures and humidity will create oppressive conditions, particularly for those spending time outdoors or without reliable cooling.

Residents of Amarillo, Pampa, Borger, Clarendon, and Perryton are urged to limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors and relatives, especially vulnerable individuals.

Popular parks and tourist destinations, such as Palo Duro Canyon State Park, are expected to experience extreme heat, especially along exposed trails and ridges, where conditions can become dangerous. Emergency officials recommend wearing lightweight clothing and avoiding strenuous tasks during the peak heat hours.

The Heat Advisory is expected to last through Thursday evening, with slightly cooler temperatures forecast for Friday. However, additional advisories may be issued if the extreme heat persists.
