Central Arizona is in the grip of a prolonged and dangerous heat wave, with temperatures in the Phoenix metro expected to reach between 108°F and 118°F through at least Friday evening. The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the region, including the cities of Mesa, Glendale, Scottsdale, Goodyear, and surrounding communities. The warning highlights an exceptionally high risk of heat-related illness, especially for vulnerable populations and those spending extended time outdoors.
According to the NWS, the most intense heat is forecast from Tuesday through Thursday, with Phoenix projected to hit 116°F on Wednesday — the peak of the heat wave. Even nighttime offers little relief, with lows hovering in the upper 80s to low 90s, increasing the likelihood of overnight heat stress. The oppressive conditions will remain dangerous even after sunset due to retained heat in urban areas and elevated humidity.
The heat risk is particularly severe for seniors, young children, outdoor workers, and individuals without access to reliable air conditioning. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) advises anyone working outdoors to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces and to stay alert for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, such as dizziness, fatigue, confusion, or nausea.
To help mitigate the risk, Maricopa County officials are urging residents to call 2-1-1 to locate nearby cooling centers, which provide free access to air conditioning, water, and in many cases, transportation. These centers are essential lifelines for those who may be unable to stay safe at home due to a lack of cooling options.
Outdoor activities should be minimized between late morning and early evening, when the sun is strongest and heat exposure peaks. If being outside is unavoidable, residents should wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, apply sunscreen, and drink water consistently throughout the day — not just when thirsty.
Here’s what to expect in the five-day forecast for Phoenix:
- Tuesday: High near 112°F under mostly sunny skies. A slight chance of evening storms could bring brief relief but may also increase humidity.
- Wednesday: The most dangerous day of the week, with a forecast high of 116°F and a low near 91°F. Mostly clear skies and little wind will make conditions especially oppressive.
- Thursday: Another scorcher, with highs again near 116°F. Overnight lows will dip only to about 90°F under partly cloudy skies.
- Friday: Slight moderation in temperature, with a high around 111°F. The heat warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. as risks persist.
- Saturday: A slight chance of thunderstorms may bring temporary relief. Highs will be near 108°F, with an overnight low around 88°F.
The ongoing heat event is part of a broader regional pattern, with excessive temperatures affecting much of the Southwest. Phoenix residents are urged to remain vigilant, limit exposure, and care for one another — especially those without shelter or cooling resources. With no major cooling trend in sight, the message remains clear: stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe.
