Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive two checks in August due to the way the payment schedule works. SSI, managed by the Social Security Administration (SSA), provides monthly funds to qualifying individuals whose income and resources, such as vehicles or bank account balances, are limited, according to the SSA.
The first payment for August is set for Friday, August 1. However, due to the schedule, another SSI payment is set for August 29. This second payment will cover September, meaning SSI recipients will not receive a payment during the actual month of September. Instead, they will get it earlier in August.
Additionally, if you also receive Social Security, you can expect to receive three checks in August.
A key thing to note is that some recipients may see smaller Social Security checks due to overpayment issues. An overpayment can happen when beneficiaries fail to report a change in income, or when the SSA mistakenly calculates a person’s benefits. The SSA announced in April that it would begin notifying recipients who were overpaid in the past. After sending these notices, recipients will have 90 days to request a waiver or negotiate a lower repayment rate. Following this period, the SSA will begin withholding 50% of recipients’ benefits to recover the overpayment, which may start as early as July 24.
For SSI recipients, here is the 2025 payment schedule: The first SSI check for August will be distributed on Friday, August 1, 2025. A second payment for September will come on Friday, August 29, 2025. October’s first check will be sent out on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, followed by the second payment on Friday, October 31, 2025. December’s first check will be distributed on Monday, December 1, 2025, and the second payment will be made on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. SSI recipients will receive two checks in August, October, and December due to how the payment schedule falls.
Regarding Social Security, payments are made on four specific dates each month, mostly corresponding to recipients’ birthdates. In August 2025, those receiving Social Security before May 1997, or both Social Security and SSI, will receive their payment on August 1. Recipients whose birthdates fall between the 1st and 10th will receive their payments on August 13. Those whose birthdates fall between the 11th and 20th will get their payments on August 20, and those with birthdates from the 21st to the 31st will receive their checks on August 27.
In California, over 1.1 million people received SSI payments as of May 2025, with more than half of them eligible due to disability or blindness. As of December 2023, over 6 million people in California were receiving Social Security, with approximately 77% of them being retired workers.
For those wondering about eligibility for SSI, the general income limit is $2,019 per month from work. However, this limit increases for couples, and there are additional allowances when parents apply for children.
