Dangerous Heat Continues in Virginia and North Carolina on Monday

Richmond, Virginia – Extreme heat will continue into Monday evening across much of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, with heat index values reaching as high as 107°F in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, an Extreme Heat Warning expired on Sunday at 8 p.m., but a Heat Advisory is still in effect until 8 p.m. Monday for over 30 counties and cities, including Virginia Beach, Richmond, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Hertford, NC.

Heat Advisory Details

The advisory covers both inland and coastal zones, where a combination of high humidity and temperatures in the upper 90s will make it feel well above 100°F. Cities like Hopewell, Petersburg, and Elizabeth City will experience the hottest conditions, especially during the afternoon commute hours on Monday.

Safety Tips

Residents are strongly encouraged to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of fluids, and check on elderly neighbors or those without air conditioning. Cooling centers are open in several areas to provide relief from the heat.

Outlook

The Heat Advisory is set to expire by Monday evening, but forecasters warn that additional alerts may be issued if oppressive heat continues into Tuesday.
