Sioux Falls, South Dakota —  Officials from the United States Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District are responding to an incident involving a contractor crane that tipped over at Fort Randall Dam on Monday afternoon.

Around 2 p.m., the crane tipped on the bridge deck of the dam’s intake structure, according to a Corps of Engineers news release. Emergency personnel aided the crane operator, who was transported to a nearby hospital. Officials said no further medical information is currently available.

According to preliminary findings, the dam’s structural integrity and public safety are unaffected. USACE personnel are working with contractors and local responders to analyze the situation and identify the next actions.

The reason of the occurrence is being investigated.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers operates Fort Randall Dam at Pickstown, South Dakota, as part of the Missouri River mainstem system, for flood risk management, hydropower, and other approved purposes.

The Fort Randall Dam is currently under construction, with big turbine units scheduled to be replaced over the next eight years. According to officials, this construction project is unrelated to the event that occurred on Monday.
