The Lorain City School District plans to transfer all transportation services in-house by the end of the 2025-2026 school year.
The district began outsourcing some of its transportation a little more than ten years ago. It used private transportation companies to transport homeless children, students with special needs, and students attending after-school activities or care.
Over time, the distance required to pick up these pupils has increased, as has the cost of transportation. Superintendent Jeff Graham stated that the district formed a team to plan how to move all transportation totally in-house.
Graham and the district anticipate that the adjustments might save the district $1 million per year.
“We were in a situation very recently where we needed to account for $10 million a year,” Graham said the crowd. “So, bringing the transportation in-house has resulted in tremendous savings for us. I believe it is the most respectable thing for our taxpayers.”
A few privatized routes will be in place this school year, but their contracts will expire at the end of the school year.
To increase efficiency this school year, the district is also adjusting start and end times. These times will be finalized soon, and parents will receive a warning via the district’s notification system.
