The Van Wert scammer was taken into custody and accused of criminal theft

Van Wert County, Ohio — The Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that an individual was arrested on Thursday in connection with a potential scam.

After the Van Wert Sheriff’s Department received a call, the victim explained that someone had contacted them and asked them to pay a bond. The caller allegedly identified themselves as a government agent and gave specific instructions on how much money needed to be paid, how to package it, and who would come to the victim’s house to collect the money.

When Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the victim’s home, they discovered a man on the premises. Andrii Osoba, 29, of Warren, Michigan, was arrested and charged with theft from the elderly, a third-degree felony.

Osoba was transported to the Van Wert County Correctional Facility and held on a cash bond. The incident is currently being investigated.

The Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office advises that if you receive a similar call, hang up immediately and never give out personal or banking information. If you receive a similar call, immediately notify the Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office at 419-238-3866 or your local police department.
