WAPAKONETA, Ohio — The 56th anniversary of Apollo 11 and Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon will be commemorated in the astronaut’s hometown from Tuesday through Sunday.
The renowned astronaut was born in Wapakoneta in 1930. He died in Cincinnati in 2012, aged 82.
“The Wapakoneta Summer Moon Festival is not only a celebration of our hometown hero, Neil Armstrong, but also a testament to the incredible community spirit that unites us all,” Lindsey Young, executive director of the Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement.
In addition to the Armstrong Air & Space Museum’s extended hours and exhibits, the Wapakoneta Summer Moon Festival includes family activities such as wiener dog races and a cornhole tournament, vendors, food trucks, and a beer garden, live music, and car and antique tractor shows. Special events include the Run to the Moon, which includes 10K and 5K runs as well as a 1-mile fun run, a pickleball tournament, and a scholarship pageant.
