Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Mike Diedrich, a former Rapid City-area legislator, has died.

Mike Diedrich died on Saturday, according to multiple social media posts from former colleagues.

“Like many others, I am saddened by Mike Diedrich’s passing. He was a friend and mentor to many people, including me. He was a true public servant. He loved life, welcomed everyone he met, and served our community with grace, commitment, honor, and dedication. Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun said in a statement released on Sunday morning.

Republican Sen. Casey Crabtree shared photos of himself and Diedrich on his Facebook page, writing, “As a leader, he made South Dakota a better place and brought out the best in those who served with him.” He was always thoughtful, civil, and had a unique ability to make people smile.

Diedrich was the first president of the Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park Foundation, and the park said it was deeply saddened to learn of his death.

“Mike was a lifelong Rapid City resident, a Bush Scholar, and a leader in the South Dakota State Legislature.” “We are confident that his efforts to preserve this green space in the heart of Rapid City will be among his greatest accomplishments,” the Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park wrote on Facebook.

Diedrich took a leave of absence in January 2024 to address health issues.
