Understanding the Legal Landscape of Pocket Knives in Pennsylvania

Pocket knives are generally legal to own and carry in Pennsylvania, provided they are not classified as “offensive weapons” and are used for a lawful purpose. Pennsylvania law does not set a specific blade length limit for pocket knives. Instead, the legality depends on the type of knife and the intent behind its possession or use.

Automatic knives and switchblades, which open automatically by push-button or spring, were previously prohibited as offensive weapons. However, recent changes in Pennsylvania law have removed the prohibition on the manufacture, sale, and possession of automatic knives, allowing residents to legally own them for lawful purposes such as outdoor activities or work. Despite this, the law distinguishes between owning and carrying: while ownership is broadly permitted, carrying any knife—especially concealed—requires a lawful purpose, such as for work, hunting, or as a tool.

It is illegal to carry knives onto school property or into court facilities. Violating these location-based restrictions can result in arrest and confiscation of the knife. Open carry of knives is generally allowed, as long as the knife is not intended for unlawful use or classified as a prohibited weapon. Concealed carry is more restricted and must be for a lawful activity.

Pennsylvania law also includes a “curio exception,” which allows for the ownership of otherwise restricted knives if they are kept for lawful reasons, such as collecting or theatrical use. However, you must be able to demonstrate a legitimate reason for ownership if questioned by law enforcement.

Pocket knives are legal in Pennsylvania for most people and purposes, but carrying them in schools, courts, or with unlawful intent is prohibited. The law focuses on intent and use rather than blade length. Automatic knives are now legal to own and carry if you can show a lawful purpose, but always be prepared to justify your possession if questioned by authorities
