Terre Haute, Indiana — Beginning July 1, Indiana Adult Protective Services (APS) will transition to a new model that shifts the service away from county prosecutors and towards a private contractor.
According to the Vigo County Prosecutors’ Office, the Family and Social Services Administration service will be transferred from prosecutors to five regions managed by a private contractor, PCG-IN.
Allen County will be one of the fifteen counties in Region 2.
This move will take APS out of local control, which Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt expressed concern about in May.
“I just think it make a big difference when you have local people that are doing those jobs, that are acquainted with other people in the community and are familiar with the community,” Modesitt told me.
The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, on the other hand, stated that the state will put in place a social service model that adheres to the RISE principles (repair harm, inspire change, support connection, and empower choice) to connect people with services in their community.
“The RISE model’s principles have been shown to reduce the frequency of repeat investigations in APS. Using a social services model requires a person-centred approach to investigations. The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration stated that it will continue to focus on connecting people with community services to ensure their safety and well-being.
The Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration does not currently have a contact for regional hubs, but all reporting can be made by calling 1-800-992-6978 or clicking this link.
