Calls to the Decatur Police Department increased slightly in May.

According to a police department report, calls last month totaled 1,646, an increase of 86 over the previous month.

In the first five months of 2025, the department responded to a total of 5,782 service calls, with an average of 1,156 per month.

Calls involving juvenile complaints, traffic hazards, reckless driving complaints, traffic accidents, and traffic enforcement all saw significant increases in May.

“For some odd reason, as the weather gets nicer we always see an increase with traffic related issues,” according to the report. “Please drive with due regard for everyone else on the roadways, stay off your devices, use your turn signals, always double check at intersections, and drive the speed limit.”

According to the report, the calls include both emergency and non-emergency responses, such as traffic stops, traffic-related criminal offenses, vehicle accidents, and a variety of other traffic-related concerns.

The number also includes property crimes, crimes against persons, long-term investigations, and non-criminal issues such as VIN (vehicle inspection number) checks, civil disputes, animal complaints, vehicle unlocks, and neighbor complaints.
