Texas Teen Charged with First-Degree Murder After Allegedly Stabbing Fellow Student during a Track Meet

The Texas teen accused of fatally stabbing a fellow student at a high school track meet in April has been charged with first-degree murder.

On Tuesday, June 24, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis announced that a grand jury had indicted Karmelo Sincere Anthony in the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf on April 2, 2025, at a high school track meet in Frisco.

Both boys were 17 when the incident occurred. The Texas criminal justice system treats 17-year-olds as adults.

Willis called Metcalf’s death a “violent loss” that left the community “shaken by what happened.”

“For several weeks, my team has been presenting evidence to the grand jury. “Today, I summarized that evidence and asked the Grand Jury to return a first-degree murder indictment against Karmelo Anthony, which they did,” the district attorney stated.

The case will then be taken to court for trial.

“We know this case has touched a nerve — both in Collin County and beyond. That is understandable. “When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to their core,” Willis explained. “However, the justice system functions best when it moves steadily and with principle. That is what we are committed to. And that is exactly what this case merits.”

He added, “We’re also thinking about Austin’s family and everyone who loved him. Please keep them in your thoughts — and, if possible, in your prayers.”

Willis maintained that “a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.”

Anthony has been released from custody after posting $250,000 bail.

According to a copy of the probable cause affidavit in the case obtained by PEOPLE, an eyewitness told police that Metcalf allegedly asked Anthony to leave a tent set up on the field at Kuykendall Stadium for members of his high school track team on that rainy day.

“Touch me and see what happens,” Anthony allegedly instructed Metcalf as he reached into his backpack.

According to the affidavit, the eyewitness claimed Metcalf touched Anthony, and Anthony allegedly told him to punch him and see what happened.

When Metcalf attempted to physically move Anthony, Anthony allegedly pulled a knife from his bag, stabbed him in the chest, and fled the tent, according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, Anthony told responding officers that he was “protecting himself.”

When the officer referred to Anthony as a “alleged suspect,” he appeared to admit to the crime, allegedly saying, “I’m not alleged, I did it,” according to the affidavit.

“He placed his hands on me. I told him not to,” Anthony told a police officer at one point, while also asking authorities “if what happened could be considered self-defense,” according to the affidavit.
