Kendal at Oberlin named 2025 long-term care equity leader

Kendal at Oberlin, a nonprofit life plan community and Kendal affiliate, has been named a long-term care equality leader by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and SAGE, a national advocacy and services organization for LGBTQ+ older adults, according to a press release.

Kendal at Oberlin, founded in 1993, offers individual care with a focus on memory support, assisted living, and nursing care in Oberlin. The community is wellness-oriented and provides resident-led lifestyles for independent living. The community is an affiliate of Kendal, a Quaker-based nonprofit organization that provides communities, programs, and services for older adults across the United States.

“At Kendal at Oberlin, we believe in creating a culture in which people feel comfortable and belong,” said Seth Vilensky, CEO of Kendal at Oberlin, in the release. “The LEI survey provided an opportunity for us to aim even higher and show on a national level that Kendal at Oberlin is a welcoming home for older LGBTQ+ adults.”

According to the release, the designation is based on HRC and SAGE’s long-term care equality index, which was developed to reduce invisibility among older LGBTQ+ people while emphasizing inclusive care.

The LEI assesses communities in four categories: nondiscrimination and staff training, resident services and supports, employee benefits and engagement, and public commitment to the LGBTQ+ community. Communities that meet the LEI requirements are eligible for one of three tiers: long-term equality builder, high performer, or leader.

According to the release, Kendal at Oberlin is one of 31 communities in the United States that have been designated as long-term care equality leaders.
