INDIANAPOLIS – A Decatur Township firefighter died in an off-duty motorcycle accident.

Battalion Chief Michale Turner had served with the Decatur Civil Township Fire Department (DTFD) for 22 years when he died. According to DTFD, Turner died while surrounded by family and friends.

“Chief Turner was very passionate about the Decatur Township Fire Department, as well as training future firefighters and EMS professionals,” said DTFD Chief Brandon Wood on social media.

According to the department, Turner was a strong supporter of organ donation, causes to combat blindness, and “building a better environment for anyone with whom he interacted.”

Following the announcement, messages of condolence from other fire departments poured in.

The Wayne Township Fire Department stated that “Cowboy” Turner’s final act of donating his organs will result in more lives being saved, even after his death.

“We celebrate his sacrifice by continuing to ‘Cowboy Up’ for his family and the citizens he loves to serve,” the department wrote on Twitter.

According to DTFD, Turner’s family is planning a life celebration, which has yet to be scheduled. In lieu of flowers, people are asked to donate to the Foundation Fighting Blindness.
